FAQ

An eligible full-time employee who works at least 25 hours a week is eligible for all benefit options. Eligible employees who work less than 25 hours a week may purchase a medical plan by paying the Total Monthly Rate. Substitutes, long-term subs, adult temps, student helpers, volunteers, etc., are not eligible for benefits.

An open enrollment period is held every year (November/December), and employees may make any benefit changes they would like, which will take effect on the next January 1. Benefit changes after January 1 are only allowed as a result of a change in status.

Anyone newly added to the Plan at any time is subject to the pre-existing condition limitations. (Birth/adoption may be exempt if addition requested within 30 days.)

Non-Medical Alternate Plan

This plan is an excellent choice for employees who have group medical coverage through another employer or private carrier, and do not need medical coverage through the Plano ISD. Please note that this plan is not medical coverage. For each day of in-patient hospital confinement, this plan pays $500 directly to the employee for a maximum of 60 days per calendar year. Since this is not medical coverage, you must file all hospital claims with your group medical plan, and then file a separate claim under this plan upon your release from the hospital.  The non-medical alternate plan cannot be chosen if you select a PISD medical plan.  Coverage under the non-medical alternate plan is for the employee only. Also included is a term life/A&D policy of $50,000.

Vision Service Plan

Vision insurance is provided through Vision Service Plan, Inc.  Using one of the optometrists in their national network provides the best benefit. To search their network list, visit their web siteOpens new window.

  • $25 deductible
  • 100% coverage for regular vision exam, once every 12 months

  • $120 towards frames, once every 24 months
  • $120 towards contact lenses, once every 12 months (this benefit would take the place of any benefit for glasses, both lenses and frames)
  • Discount for laser vision correction at certain providers
  • No claims to file
  • Pay only your portion of the cost at the time of your appointment

If using a non-VSP optometrist, the plan benefits are:

  • Up to $45 reimbursement for regular vision exam
  • Up to $45 reimbursement for single vision lenses
  • Up to $65 reimbursement for lined bifocal lenses
  • Up to $85 reimbursement for lined trifocal lenses
  • Up to $47 reimbursement for frames
  • Up to $105 reimbursement for contact lenses
  • You must file your claims
  • You must pay in full at the time of your appointment

Additional diagnostic tests, services, and lens treatments (high-index, transition lenses, etc.) may qualify for a discount, or may not be covered by this plan at all. The VSP network optometrist can explain what is covered and what your costs will be.

Disability Insurance

Assessing Your Need for Disability Insurance PDF file (254 KB)

There are 4 elimination (waiting) periods to choose from, so you can tailor the plan to fit your particular circumstances (sick leave, savings, etc.). Premiums are based on your age, benefit level, and elimination period. Benefits are paid directly to you, and are not subject to taxes.

14/14 elimination period PDF file (46 KB)
30/30 elimination period PDF file (46 KB)
90/90 elimination period PDF file (46 KB)

Why should you enroll in disability insurance? When accidents or long-term illness arise, most people see their expenses go up, and their income go down. Disability income protection insurance can be very beneficial, and is most appreciated when the unexpected happens. Please review the UNUM disability plan offered through the district, and consider enrolling.

Important Procedures for Disability Plan:

  • You may add this benefit mid-year only if you are a new employee. This should be done within the first 60 days of employment. Otherwise, you may add, change, or cancel this benefit only during the annual open enrollment period. Proof of good health is not required, but pre-existing condition limitations will apply.
  • You may select any benefit amount up to two-thirds of your gross monthly salary. The maximum benefit available is $7,500.
  • You will be responsible for requesting annual increases to your benefit level due to salary increases. Automatic increases are not given, unless you are enrolled in the maximum benefit level allowed for your salary.
  • To use the disability insurance for maternity, it must be in effect prior to conception.

Forms to add, change, or cancel this coverage are available online.  Remember, you may only submit paperwork for the disability insurance as a new employee or during the annual open enrollment period.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Today, people are living longer than ever before. We're also surviving once fatal illnesses and accidents that can occur at any age. However, we're not always healthier. The advanced technology that makes it possible to save more lives doesn't always restore health.

Nearly half of us, at some time in life, will need assistance with day-to-day functions like transferring (getting in and out of bed or a chair), eating or dressing, whether in a nursing home, assisted living facility or at home. (American Health Care Association, 12/98) If you're concerned about these possibilities, you might be interested in group long-term care insurance.

The long-term care insurance plan sponsored by TRS and administered by Aetna is available to employees and their spouses, parents, parents-in-law, and grandparents. The plan is portable, meaning you can keep it if you resign or retire from PISD. To learn about the features of this plan, or to request enrollment materials, please call Aetna at 1-877-894-2462 or visit their web site .
