FAQ

Claims must always be filed first with the primary plan. After the primary plan has made payment, the secondary plan must receive a copy of the Explanation of Benefits along with documentation of the total eligible expenses, in order to calculate payment.

Most Common Rules to Determine Primary Plan

From Plano ISD Plan document. (You must contact your other plan to verify their specific guidelines.)

  1. The plan that covers a person as an Employee shall be the primary plan, and the plan that covers that person as a Dependent shall be the secondary plan.
  2. For a Dependent Child whose parents are not divorced or legally separated, the primary plan shall be the plan which covers the parent as an Employee whose birthday falls first in the calendar year.

For additional rules regarding court orders, continuation coverage, and others, please consult the Plan document.
