STAARStudents in grades 3 through 5 will be participating in the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) program.  Students will be tested in the core subject areas- reading, writing, mathematics and science. The STAAR assessment focuses more deeply on content taught during the current year rather than testing knowledge and skills learned over multiple years.   STAAR assessments have a time limit.  Unless a student is eligible for an accommodation, each student will have four hours to complete each assessment.

STAAR Performance

Student performance will fall into one of the following categories.

Did Not Meet Grade Level
Performance at this level applies to students scoring below Approaches Grade Level.  This performance level indicates that students are unlikely to succeed in the next grade or course without significant, ongoing academic intervention.  Students in this category do not demonstrate a sufficient understanding of the assessed knowledge and skills.
Approached Grade Level Performance at this level indicates that students are likely to succeed in the next grade or course with targeted academic intervention.  Students in this category generally demonstrate the ability to apply the assessed knowledge and skills in familiar contexts.
Meets Grade Level Performance in this category indicates that students have a high likelihood of success in the next grade or course but may still need some short-term, targeted academic intervention.  Students in this category generally demonstrate the ability to think critically and apply the assessed knowledge and skills in familiar contexts.
Masters Grade Level Performance at this level indicates that students are expected to succeed in the next grade or course with little or no academic intervention.  Students in this category demonstrate the ability to think critically and apply the assessed knowledge and skills in varied contexts, both familiar and unfamiliar.

Impact on Grade Placement

The Student Success Initiative requires that students in grades 5 and 8 pass both the reading and math exams to be promoted to the next grade.

STAAR for Unique Student Populations

The Texas Assessment Program is a statewide testing program that includes the STAAR, STAAR Spanish and STAAR Alternate 2.  STAAR L and STAAR A were administered for the last time in December 2016; however, the embedded supports that were available on these assessments are now individual embedded online accommodations on STAAR for eligible students.  Information about these embedded supports and other accommodations, or Designated Supports can be found on the Accommodation Resources webpage.
