Thumbs Up National Merit Semifinalist
121 Plano ISD Students Achieve Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program Annual Academic Competition

Plano ISD joins with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in recognizing 121 seniors who have been awarded semifinalist standing in the 62nd Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

"Whether it be in fine arts endeavors, science and engineering research, college-level coursework, career and technical competitions or college entrance exams, we want to know that our students have a path to excellence wherever their interests and commitment take them. We are very proud of Plano ISD’s 121 National Merit semifinalists and know that this accomplishment is the result of the hard work and dedication of both our students and our teachers," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian Binggeli.

These Plano ISD students are among 16,000 academically talented students who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $33 million to be awarded next spring.

From a total of 236 high school and middle school musical ensemble entries, Plano ISD had ten winners in the 2016 Mark of Excellence competition awarded by the Foundation for Music Education. A record number of entries entered the competition via recordings in the Spring of 2016. READ

Plano ISD Applauds Congressional Resolution on Family Service Learning

Members of Congress, including Senator John Cornyn and Congressman Sam Johnson, introduced a resolution acknowledging the broad benefits of family service learning. The resolution designated the week of September 12-16 as "National Family Service Learning Week." Family service learning is a multi-generational method developed by the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) Among its many benefits, family service learning improves workforce and literacy skills while enabling parents to become stronger teachers and role models for their children.

Through family service learning, children and families learn and solve problems together with active participation in service that is conducted in and meets the needs of their community, is focused on children and families solving community issues together and applies 21st century college and career readiness skills for children and relevant workforce training skills for adults.

In March of 2016 at Harrington Public Library in Plano, families from Plano ISD's Family Literacy School came together to build 20 Little Free Libraries during a state-wide tour of the "Across America with Little Free Library" outreach campaign.READ
