Red Ribbon Week: The Serious Side of Fun

Every October since 1988 there has been a National Red Ribbon Week. It began in memory of Enrique Camarena, a police officer, who gave his life in the fight against illegal drugs. Today, the Red Ribbon is a symbol to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities.

Children of parents who talk to them regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who do not, yet nationally only a quarter of teens report having these conversations. Even kindergarten students are not too young for age-appropriate information. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has opened a new website to help families and caregivers get information and help: Get Smart About Drugs. opens in new window

In Plano ISD, Red Ribbon Week is a week-long celebration filled with assemblies and special activities, but you don’t have to dress like a super hero to encourage your children to choose to be drug free. Wearing neon or silly socks is not a requirement to talk about what’s at risk, and you don’t need to limit the conversation to just one week out of the year to remind children of the negative effects of drugs. However, choosing to have that conversation is seriously important.
