Seventy-eight Seniors Named Semifinalists in 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program

Plano ISD joins with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in recognizing 78 seniors who have been awarded semifinalist standing in the 61st Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These semifinalists from Plano ISD are among 16,000 academically talented students who represent less than one percent of the country's high school seniors. Semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million to be awarded next spring. READ

Three Plano ISD Educators Named 2015 Texas Teachers of the Year in Their Respective Fields

Texas boasts a population of 27 million people, 5 million public school children, 325,000 teachers, 9,300 schools and 1,200 districts. Even with numbers that large, remarkably three of the Lone Star State's best teachers in their respective fields were selected from among Plano ISD's cadre of 3,800. Greg Shields, (top) Plano Senior High School, captured the 2015 Texas Spanish Teacher of the Year title; Rebecca Grant, Haggard Middle School, is among 10 state finalists winning 2015 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching; and Ben Pirillo, Hughston Elementary School, is the 2015 Physical Education Teacher of the Year for the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. College Nights September 14 & 15

grad cap and handCollege nights will be hosted on Monday and Tuesday, September 14 and 15, at Plano West Senior High School and Plano Senior High School, respectively. All Plano ISD students and parents are invited to attend these events, where 250+ colleges and universities will be represented. Both events will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Find information on our district website about preparing to attend college night events and questions to be prepared to ask college representatives. September: PTA National Family Engagement Month

The Plano ISD Board of Trustees adopted a resolution on September 1 in recognition of September as PTA National Family Engagement Month. Accepting the resolution on behalf of the Plano ISD Council of PTAs was Amy Nelson, council president. Ms. Nelson is pictured (center, holding resolution) with fellow PTA council board members. "PTA is the ideal conduit for this family engagement and community involvement," said Ms. Nelson. "We, the Plano ISD Council of PTAs board and more than 23,000 Plano ISD PTA local members are pleased that you support the role of PTA in advocating for and positively impacting our students." READ

On September 17, donations of $25 or more can be made from 6 a.m. to midnight to more than 2,100 certified nonprofit organizations, including the Plano ISD Education Foundation. Those donations will be amplified by more than $2 million dollars in bonus funds and prizes. Read more about the Plano ISD Education Foundation on the district website. President Nancy Humphrey Recognized at September Meeting
School Board President Nancy Humphrey was recognized at the September 1 board meeting for her designation as a lifetime member of the Leadership TASB Alumni Association. She is pictured with her husband Jim and fellow Leadership TASB Alums and school board officers Vice President Missy Bender and Secretary Carrolyn Moebius. Leadership TASB is a highly selective program sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards.
