Plano ISD Seniors Named Semifinalists in 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program

September 14, 2016

121 Plano ISD Students in Competition
for 7,500 Scholarships Worth More than $33 Million

National Merit LogoPlano ISD joins with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in recognizing 121 students who have been awarded semifinalist standing in the 62nd Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

These Plano ISD students are among 16,000 academically talented students who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $33 million to be awarded next spring.

About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state's percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, semifinalists must fulfill academic and application requirements to advance to the finalist level of competition. Of the estimated 90 percent of the semifinalists who achieve finalist standing, approximately one half will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title. Read more in the National Merit Scholarship Corporation's 2017 press releasePDF.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2017 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July.
