DECA at Plano Senior High School Organizes “Fish Bowl” Event modeled on the TV show Shark Tank

December 5, 2016

On Monday, December 5 there were “Sharks” at Plano Senior High. DECA student project managers, Tanvee Asundi, Vince Buccini, Evan Hara and Mehul Virmani organized this student-lead event (under the supervision of DECA sponsors Tricia Cannon, CTE marketing department chair and Samantha Spears marketing education teacher).

Area business leaders and business partners identified through the Plano ISD Education Foundation were invited to the school to listen to, give advice and make offers to student entrepreneurial groups in a Shark Tank style setting. WFAA Channel 8 captured the story. The business leaders, called Big Fish, attending were:

  • Mr. Eric Anderson, Executive Vice President, Fossil Group
  • Mr. Michael Arnold, Owner/Principal, Texas Construction Aggregates
  • Mr. Mark Cuban, Owner, Dallas Mavs
  • Ms. Kim Dixon, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President, FedEx Office
  • Dr. Venu Menon, Vice President, Texas Instruments, Inc.
  • Mr. Jerry Miranda, Director of Production, Dallas Stars
  • Mr. Dennis L. Ziegler, Packaging Equipment Specialist, Evergreen Packaging Equipment

These seven business leaders dedicated several hours from their busy schedules to support this event. Six student teams presented their inventive ideas and business plans to the Big Fish. Then three students with small businesses already in operation also presented. (See details of all student presentations). After a Fish Tank vote, two teams of presenters were Big Fish favorites, and two student-run small business presenters received soft offers from the Big Fish.

DECA, part of Plano ISD’s career and technical education department prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. The student project managers of "Fish Bowl" plan to take this event to competition this school year.
