Plano East Marching Band Advances to State Competition in San Antonio

October 29, 2016

The 2016 Plano East Senior High Marching Band will be making its fifth appearance at the UIL 6A State Marching Band Contest on November 8-9 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Twenty-five 6A high school marching bands, representing five UIL music regions from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, competed at the Area B contest on Saturday, October 29, in preliminary competition. The top ten scoring bands advanced from prelims to the final round of competition that same evening, and the top five bands from that final competition now advance to the state marching contest. Plano East is part of this elite group or five.

In the prelims, the Plano East marching band placed 9th overall, earning them a place in that evening’s final competition where they were fortunate to draw the last performing time in finals. In the final competition, the students' performance was much stronger which allowed them to move up four places to fifth place, which qualified them to advance to the UIL State Marching Band Contest.

Competing in preliminary competition in the UIL 6A State Contest will be forty 6A high school marching bands, representing all the geographical areas of the state. Plano East will perform on Tuesday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m.

Of the forty bands at the state contest, twelve will advance to the finals which will be held the next morning, Wednesday, November 9.

The road to the state competition began at the UIL Region 25 marching contest on October 22 at Clark Stadium in Plano. The Plano East marching band earned its 35th consecutive Division 1 “Superior” rating at that contest, which allowed them to advance to the Area B Contest.

The title of this year’s show is The Steampunk Heart and features the following musical selections:

  • The Promise of Living by Aaron Copland, Chamber Symphony
  • Mvt. 3-Roadrunner by John Adams
  • The Engulfed Cathedral by Claude Debussy
  • Turbine by John Mackey

The show features a giant “heart” in the middle of the field which is "constructed” over the course of the program. At the end, all of the pieces come together and the heart evolves from a lifeless mechanical object to a live, beating, heart!

The marching band will depart for the state contest at 6:30 a.m. from Plano East on Tuesday, November 8. A “send-off” performance for the public will be held at Kimbrough Stadium on Monday, November 7 at 8 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Directors of the Plano East Band are Evelio Villarreal, John Brennan and Lee Redfearn III. Ceon Rumphs, from Baylor University, is assisting as a student teaching intern this fall. Guard instructors are Nicole Carreon, Alexis Mendoza and Alex Fernandez. Percussion Instructors are Clyde McGuire, Mike Nation and Isaac Citzman. Marching Techs are Dillon Lawrence and McKenna Hill. Visual coordinator is Michael Henson.
