Does Plano ISD need substitutes?

Plano ISD is always looking for substitutes especially in hard-to-fill areas, such as math, science, special education and bilingual positions.

Does Plano ISD accept substitute applications all year?

Yes, applications are accepted all year; however these applications will be processed according to the next available substitute orientation.

What positions are considered hard-to-fill?

Examples of hard-to-fill positions include mathematics, science, foreign language, special education and bilingual education.

How do I get in the PISD substitute pool?

  3. Receive invitation to a mandatory substitute orientation meeting.
  4. Attend a mandatory substitute orientation meeting.

What are the requirements for substitutes?

  • All applicants must pass a criminal history check to be eligible to substitute in Plano ISD.
  • Substitute teacher requirements: Bachelor’s degree.
  • Substitute licensed nurse or licensed professional requirements;
    current license
  • Substitute paraprofessional (such as classroom assistant or clerical) requirements;
    high school diploma or equivalent
  • Individuals with a degree from a university located outside of the U.S. must have the degree transcripts evaluated by an accredited international degree equivalency evaluator and meet current criteria for substitute positions.

I am retired. May I apply for a substitute position?

Generally speaking an employee retired from a Texas school district, who is currently drawing pay from the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), may substitute as many days as desired following one complete calendar month of non-work. Substitute pay for retired Texas school district employees will be the usual and customary substitute pay. Any questions regarding retirement or how substitute pay may affect retirement earnings should be directed to TRS.

Do I need to submit any documentation when applying for a substitute position?

Yes, after completing an online application, bring the following documents to: PISD HR Services- 2700 W 15th Street, Plano, TX 75075 Attention: Substitute Application

  • Substitute teacher; official transcripts indicating degree conferred. Certification is not required, however, if you are a certified teacher, please submit a copy of your teaching certificate or a letter of acceptance from certification program or proof of current enrollment in a certification program.
  • Substitute license nurse or licensed professional;
    photocopy of current license and official transcripts.
  • Substitute paraprofessional (such as classroom assistant or clerical position); photocopy of high school diploma or equivalent or college transcripts.
  • Individuals with a degree from a university located outside of the U.S.must provide degree transcripts evaluated by an accredited international degree equivalency evaluator and meet current criteria for substitute positions.

I have a foreign degree. Is it acceptable?

Individuals  with a degree from a university located outside of the U.S. must have degree transcripts evaluated by an accredited international degree equivalency evaluator and meet current criteria for substitute positions.

Do I need to attend an orientation to be a substitute?

Yes. After the application is processed, applicants are invited to attend the substitute orientation meeting to complete and submit required paperwork, and to be trained on important expectations and procedures.

How many new hire orientation meetings are scheduled this school year?

There are four substitute orientation meetings scheduled per school year.

If I submit an application, would I be invited to the next substitute orientation meeting?

Applicants will be invited to the next scheduled substitute orientation meeting, from the date the application has been processed, not when it was submitted. Plano ISD will make every effort to process each application promptly after all documents have been submitted. An invitation will be sent only if the substitute application is complete, reference forms are returned and criminal history check has cleared.

How are substitutes paid?

Pay is deposited directly to the substitute's bank account every two weeks.

How often are substitutes called to work?

Substitutes are called as needs arise through an automated system. Details and training are provided at the substitute orientation meeting.
